Black Bears Fall to Boston College in Season Opener

Marcus Wasilewski went 20-42 with 62 yards and two interceptions in his first career start as the Black Bears fell 34-3 to the Boston College Eagles.

It was not the start Wasilewski and the Black Bears hoped for as the Eagles of the ACC took advantage of their weaker opponent. There were a lot of questions for Maine going into this game with all the roster turn over from a season ago, questions that could not be fully answered against an FBS opponent.

Maine kicked the scoring off with a Brian Harvey 19 yard field goal to give Maine a 3-0 lead.

Those would be the only points the Black Bear’s put up all afternoon.

BC came out hot after a sloppy first quarter as QB Chase Rettig hooked up with Spiffy Evans for a three yard touchdown pass to give the Eagles a 7-3 lead.

Two minuets later, Rettig hit Jonathan Coleman with a nine yard pass, upping the score to 14-3. Nate Freese wrapped up the scoring in the first half with a 39 yard field goal to give Boston College a ten point advantage.

It was all Boston College in the second half as Nate Freese opened up the scoring with a 20 yard field goal. After a quick Maine three and out, Spiffy Evans took an 82 yard punt return to the house to give the Eagles a commanding 27-3 lead. Following Evans’s return, a quick Wasilewski interception setup Rettig’s second touch down pass of the day, connecting with Alex Amidon for a 32 yard score to give Boston College the decisive 34-3 lead.

Untimely penalties and sloppy play hindered the Black Bears greatly. The Eagles experienced the same issues in their season opening loss agains the University of Miami, playing the agressor this week and taking advantage of every Black Bear mistake in a timely fashion.

One of the bright spots for Maine was the play of senior linebacker Donte Dennis in his first game back since 2010. Dennis missed all of last season after Tommy John surgery and lead the team today with 9.5 tackles. In 2010, Dennis lead the CAA in tackles and was named to the conference’s third team.

Michael Cole had two sacks for the Black Bears and forced a fumble while David Hood, in his first game taking over for Pushan Brown, rushed for 64 yards.

Maurice McDonald, also in his first game back after a season ending injury, lead the Black Bears with six catches and 37 receiving yards while Maine’s Jeffery Ondish tallied an astounding 356 yards punting in the loss.

The Black Bears are back at it next weekend when they travel to Bryant University in search of their first victory of 2012.

WMEB’s coverage of Black Bear football will return the following weekend as the University of Albany comes to Orono for Maine’s home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
